What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a modern psychotherapeutic approach. Practical, structured, and well researched. It is a type of talking therapy, combining the use of psychotherapy & hypnosis. We look at and focus on what the client wants to achieve (the solution) rather than the problem. We do not dig into the person’s past as this is not necessary to help them formulate a plan to move forward. Helping people to make significant positive changes in their lives, and in a relatively short space of time.
What is meant by an initial consultation?
During our first session together, I’ll take some basic information, then explain aspects of how the brain works, how issues can develop and, most importantly, what we can do about it. This will help with establishing how you can benefit the most from us working together. I’ll give you a link for a relaxation download to listen to each night when it is time to go to sleep. This will help the process enormously.
In following sessions we’ll work on how you want your life to be, and what small steps you can take towards your goal. I’ll then guide you through relaxation and trance.
Is Hypnosis safe?
Yes, of course. Hypnosis (often referred to as trance) is a natural and very safe state to be in. Contrary to what you might see on television, trance is not mind control. You, the client, are still in control, and your subconscious mind will process the information or suggestions given, and decide whether it’s useful or not; you cannot do anything that is against your will.
What exactly is hypnosis or trance?
Trance is a shift in conscious awareness. We all go into trance multiple times every day. Often when driving, reading a book, going for a run, watching television, even washing the dishes. It’s like being in a daydream. During this state, our unconscious mind is much more aware and is able to focus on helpful suggestions and thoughts. It is a very relaxing experience!
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions required depends upon the issue and that client’s commitment to the therapy. Hypnotherapy is not magic, it is a collaborative effort between the client and the therapist. The client is fully involved in the process and is encouraged to participate fully. The more engaged you are in the process and committed to your sessions, the more likely you are to achieve the positive outcome that you desire, and potentially in a shorter period of time.
Those experiencing the symptoms of anxiety, stress or depression typically ask to see me for between six and ten sessions, sometimes more – by which time they’re back on top of things.
For specific phobias, we have a four-session protocol based on our brain model and the highly effective Rewind technique.
Smoking cessation is a single session which we allow up to two hours for.
Can anyone be hypnotised?
Generally, yes, as long as they want to be!
Whoever says they can’t be hypnotised is right, as you need to be a part of the process and you are always fully in control. Remember, it is a natural state. Hypnosis is simply achieving that state as and when you choose.
What can Solution Focused Hypnotherapy help with?
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help with stress, anxiety (including panic attacks), low mood/depression, insomnia, confidence, self-esteem, exam nerves. Help with symptoms of IBS, chronic pain (pain management), etc. It can also help with weight management, OCD, specific phobias, public speaking, trauma & PTSD, sports performance, business performance, and more.
Will I need to re-live upsetting memories?
No. We can’t undo the past. We can’t change the past. We can’t erase memories of the past. What we can do is re-evaluate the past from our current perspective e.g. as an adult rather than as a child. We can choose to let to go of what no longer serves us well. We can learn to cope more resourcefully. We can choose to live in the present. We can develop our self-awareness, supporting us in living more fulfilling lives.
When are appointments available?
Appointments available Monday to Thursday. I work from my home studio in Kirkliston on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and from Mullberry House at the West end of Edinburgh on a Tuesday.
How long do sessions last?
Initial Consultation – 45 mins.
Standard sessions – 1 hour.
Smoking cessation – 2 hours.
How does it work online?
For online sessions I use zoom. This is really easy to use and if you’ve not used it before I can talk you through it. All you need is a stable internet connection, and a device with a camera. For the hypnosis part, you’ll just need a comfortable chair or sofa. The results I have experienced from online sessions have proven that it is just as effective as face-to-face sessions.
